• Establish and formulate county policies
• Establish annual county property tax millage rate
• Adopt ordinances and rules
• Adopt annual county budget and long-range capital improvement program
• Adopt the county development plan
• Adopt and enforce rules establishing the authority, duties and responsibilities of county departments and offices

The Board operates under a committee system. There are four standing committees:

• Economic Development and Infrastructure Committee
• Finance Committee
• Legislative Affairs and Government Operations Committee
• Public Health and Safety Committee

These committees facilitate the many items of business for which the Board of Commissioners is responsible by reviewing information and making recommendations for consideration by the entire Board.

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners hosts its standing committee and full Board meetings in-person at 1200 N. Telegraph Rd., Bldg. 12 East, in Pontiac. Standing committee meetings are hosted in Committee Room A, which the public can access through the south courthouse entrance. Full Board meetings are hosted in the Commissioners Auditorium, which the public can access through the auditorium entrance directly to the west of the south courthouse entrance. Individuals can address the Board in-person at standing committee and full Board meetings during the public comment portion of the meeting agenda.  
 
The following items cannot be brought into the building:

• Weapons
• Liquids
• Lighters
• Display of signs, banners, placards and related items

The National Association of Counties (NACo) recognized three Board programs - the 2020-2021 Oakland Together School Nurse Initiative, Blueprint for Successful Aging and Board of Commissioners Digital Meeting Resources and Technology Updates Project - with 2022 NACo Achievement Awards.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) recognized four Board programs - the Safe for School Hotline, Oakland Together Lifeline Program, Native Plant Initiative, and the Clean, Drain, Dry, Dispose Pilot Program - with 2021 NACo Achievement Awards.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) honored the Board of Commissioners with a 2020 Achievement Award, recognizing the Board's Better with Breakfast program.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) honored the Board of Commissioners with two 2019 Achievement Awards, recognizing programs focused on the importance of clean, healthy water.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) honored the Board of Commissioners with a 2018 Achievement Award for human trafficking prevention efforts.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) honored the Board of Commissioners with three 2017 Achievement Awards, recognizing programs designed to promote gun safety, prevent bullying and aid with local road repairs.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) recognized Oakland County as a S.A.F.E. Summer Local Champion for its efforts to promote firearm safety.

Homes for Autism presented the 2015 Golden Ring of Hope Award to Oakland County Commissioner Michael J. Gingell.

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners and IT Digital Editorial Team placed 3rd in the nation in the Best Government Social Media Campaign category for their human trafficking social media campaign.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) honored Oakland County with a 2014 Achievement Award in the category of Civic Education and Public Information for its efforts to promote gun safety.
