Protocol
In order to better serve the attorneys and litigants appearing in Judge O'Brien's courtroom, we have adopted the following guidelines. Please advise your clients and staff so that there are no misunderstandings. Obtain a copy of the Protocol.

Judge O’Brien is currently holding court both in person and via zoom. Monday criminal call is IN PERSON for in custody defendants and sentencings/violations of probation, and defendants who are on bond will usually have the option to appear in person or remotely via zoom.

Judge O’Brien’s motion call is held every Wednesday morning beginning at 8:30am. Motion call is conducted remotely via zoom (meeting ID 248-858-7960) unless otherwise requested.
To schedule a motion, please file a praecipe for any available motion call date and follow the court rules for notice requirements.
Judge’s copies are not required for non-dispositive motions.
Upon the timely filing of a motion for summary disposition, the court will issue a briefing scheduling order with dates for response, optional reply, and hearing date.

For more specific inquiries, please refer to the briefing scheduling order that is issued once the motion is filed.
Upon the filing of three or more motions in limine, Judge O’Brien will require the parties to submit a tabbed binder with the judge’s copies of the motions and corresponding responses. Each tab should include a motion and the corresponding response, not separate binders from both sides.
The binder must be submitted to chambers by no later than 12:00pm on the Monday before the motions are scheduled to be heard.
Judge O’Brien’s criminal call is held every Monday morning beginning at 8:30am unless the courthouse is closed for a holiday.
