Jeffrey Polkowski began his career with the Charter Township of Waterford as the superintendent of planning and zoning just three weeks before Michigan’s stay-at-home order went into effect because of COVID.

He quickly pivoted to ensure small businesses could continue operating, drafting ordinance amendments and deploying Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funds. Due to the success of his actions, Polkowski was tapped to present at the Oakland County Planners Gathering Educational Forum and the Michigan Municipal Executives Winter Conference.

As the current director of development services for Waterford, he oversees the Building Division, Engineering Division, Community Planning & Zoning Division, and Code Enforcement. In 2023, Rep. Haley Stevens invested $750,000 in Polkowski’s proposal to reinvent Drayton Plains into a shopping, dining, and entertainment district — giving residents and visitors a downtown destination.

Additionally, he is a member of the Waterford Township Community Water Advisory Council.

Polkowski earned a bachelor’s degree in earth science from the State University of New York College and a master’s degree in community and regional planning from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Originally from New York City, Polkowski calls Waterford home.
