With a mission to improve accessibility, Alan Hejl founded and leads Spark Access in Ferndale, which helps companies and communities become more inclusive and accessible for people with disabilities.

Removing barriers to accessibility is a personal passion for Hejl, who has chronic nerve pain and said he identifies with those in neurodiverse communities. He also said his partner is paralyzed and uses a wheelchair.

He serves on the Ferndale Accessibility & Inclusion Advisory Commission for the city of Ferndale, is a board member of the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition and is an active member of the Detroit Disability Power. He also helped build the automotive industry’s first Accessibility Center of Excellence at General Motors.

Hejl earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan Tech University and received a certificate in disability inclusion and accessible design from the University of Michigan.

 He lives in Ferndale.
