Oakland County Health Division is committed to increasing childhood lead screening and education. Lead exposure can permanently change the nervous system. Lead poisoning is preventable if someone is screened early for lead exposure. Michigan law requires universal blood lead screening for children at ages 1 and 2.
Any client 0-6 years old with a lead level of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) or greater.
If a venous lead level is drawn on the client and the level is greater than or equal to 3.5 µg/dL, the client qualifies for lead case management services through Oakland County. Lead team nurses work closely with our registered dieticians and environmental health staff to provide education to reduce lead exposure.
A lead nurse will contact a client to make an appointment once their venous level is known.

If your home, childcare facility, or school was built prior to 1978, you may want to assume lead-based paint is present and follow lead-safe work practices. You can hire a certified inspector or risk assessor to determine if your home or facility has lead hazards.

Renovation, repair, and painting (RRP) projects in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 require by federal law the hiring of contractors to follow appropriate practices to prevent lead contamination.
Assistance may be available for home repairs to remove lead paint hazards. A HEPA vacuum is available to borrow. Call Environmental Health Services at 248-858-1312.
The Environmental Health Services (EHS) unit administers several programs and services to help protect health through the promotion of environmentally sound practices.
