Breastfeeding a child with special health circumstances can provide them with the extra nutrition to meet their specialized needs. However, it may also present some additional challenges to the breastfeeding individual and child, including but not limited to: slow weight gain for the child, alternative positioning during feedings, and difficulty latching.
The breastfeeding individual should work closely with their physician and child's healthcare provider. It would also be beneficial for them to receive support from a breastfeeding support professional.
