For veterans, civilian life often includes building a post-military career, no matter one’s age, education or background. The professionals at the six Oakland County Michigan Works! service centers are available to provide you, your spouse and family caregivers with comprehensive career planning, training programs, job search resources and more on a priority basis.

Our veteran employment counselors can help you:

• Match your military experience and accomplishments with civilian occupations
• Help you secure military credentials, certifications and licenses that you earned
• Prepare you for conducting a successful job search
• Connect you with disabled/injured veteran resources
• Find additional resources available to you and your family to aid in the transition to civilian life

Oakland County Michigan Works! Veterans Services

Oakland County Michigan Works! provides U.S. military veterans and transitioning service members with access to the tools needed to obtain employment in southeast Michigan. In fact, all eligible veterans, their spouses, and their caregivers receive priority status for job training programs.

Eligible Veterans:

• Served at least one day in the active* military, naval or air service
  • *Active service includes full-time Federal service in the National Guard or a Reserve component
• Discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable

Eligible Spouses of Any:

• Veteran who died of a service-connected disability
• Member of the Armed Forces on active duty who is missing in action, was captured in the line of duty, or forcibly detained by a foreign government or power, for a total of 90 or more days
• Veteran who has a service-connected total disability
• Veteran who died while a disability was in existence

Family Caregivers: 

•  A parent, spouse, child, stepfamily member, extended family member or a person who lives with, but is not a member of the family of the veteran, who cares for the wounded, ill, or injured veteran

Disability Compensation

Monetary compensation for a disability that arose during or were aggravated by service or are presumed to be related to military service. In addition, the surviving dependent of a service member who died in the line of duty or from a service-related injury or illness may be eligible for monetary compensation.

Did You Know?
Veterans suffering from PTSD may be eligible for benefits:

• Service-connected disability comp
• Mental health treatment

Pension

Monetary benefit to wartime veterans with limited income and who are either age 65 or older or who are permanently and totally disabled due to a non service connected disability. This benefit may also be available to the dependents of a deceased veteran.

• Hearing screening services and treatment, including hearing aids
•  Speech-language pathology services for Veterans with brain and spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, Dementia, and more
•  Service-connected disability compensation for hearing loss

Health Care

The VA is a full-service healthcare provider to veterans who meet eligibility criteria. As a general rule, a veteran must be enrolled, and treatment must be at VA facilities or approved for outside facilities.

Burial Benefits

The VA provides a variety of burial benefits including:

• Burial in a National Cemetery
• Headstone or marker at any cemetery
• Burial flag
• Burial allowance
• Presidential Memorial Certificate

In addition, Oakland County may provide a burial allowance, marker foundation fee and flag case.

Education

The VA pays benefits to eligible service members and veterans pursuing an approved education or training program. In addition, Vocational Rehabilitation benefits may be available to service-connected veterans.

Life Insurance

The VA provides insurance benefits to service members and veterans. As a general rule, veterans pay premiums on these policies. However, premiums may be waived in certain circumstances.

Home Loans

The VA provides home loan guarantees that may allow veterans to receive more favorable terms on a primary residence.

Transportation Program

Oakland County Veterans' Services provides barrier-free transportation to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Detroit and Ann Arbor for veterans seeking treatment.
