Hearing Screening

Hearing screens are completed for four year old preschoolers, kindergarten, second and fourth grade students. Ungraded educational programs are screened for hearing every other year.

Public Health Technicians who have completed a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Comprehensive Hearing Training Course.

A calibrated pure tone audiometer is used. Tones are presented through headphones.

You will be notified by the hearing office only if your child does not pass the screening.

• History of ear infections or drainage
• Wants the television or radio louder
• Misunderstands directions or asks to have things repeated
• Chronic congestion, allergies, or mouth breathing
• Speech is delayed or unclear
• Complaints of dizziness and/or headaches

• Does not startle at loud noises
• At 6 months of age, does not turn to look for the source of the sound
• Does not say single words, such as "mama" or "dada" by age 1
• Seems to hear some sounds but not others
